The NICOT: Every Volume of the Old Testament
A list of the current volumes of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT), the ones that replaced earlier volumes, the books that still have no volume and what exists in Spanish.
In this post
The New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT) is the sister series of the NICNT and one of the most consulted for studying and preaching the Old Testament. It is published by Eerdmans, and its first volumes came out in 1976. Today its editors are Robert L. Hubbard Jr. and Bill T. Arnold.
According to the publisher's description, all the contributors share two convictions: that the Old Testament is the word of God as he gave it to Israel, and that in those thirty-nine books his inspired and authoritative message is heard today. Each volume opens with an introduction to the book's background, authorship, date, structure and theology. Then comes the author's own translation from the Hebrew and a verse-by-verse commentary.
As with the NICNT, volumes are revised or replaced over time. This post gathers the current ones, the ones already superseded and the books still waiting for their volume. Selecting a cover opens sample pages from Logos or Google Books. Only the second edition of Ecclesiastes, published in 2026, does not yet have a sample.

Deuteronomy appears twice because the series is in transition. Arnold published the first volume of a new commentary, and the second, covering chapters 12 to 34, has not yet come out. In the meantime, Eerdmans keeps Craigie's volume in the catalog.
Replaced volumes
In recent years a large part of the series has been renewed. The earlier editions are still in circulation secondhand and in digital libraries, so it is worth checking the year when buying.
- Ruth: Robert L. Hubbard's (1988) was replaced by Lau's (2023).
- Ezra and Nehemiah: F. Charles Fensham's (1982) was replaced by Harrington's (2022).
- Jeremiah: J. A. Thompson's (1980) was replaced by Goldingay's (2021).
- Joel, Obadiah, Jonah and Micah: Leslie C. Allen's volume (1976) was replaced, for the first three books, by Nogalski's (2023).
- Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah: O. Palmer Robertson's (1990) was replaced by Renz's (2021).
- Haggai and Malachi: Pieter A. Verhoef's (1987) was replaced by Jacobs's (2017).
- Numbers and Ecclesiastes: Ashley (2022) and Longman (2026) published second editions of their own commentaries.
What is missing
Seven books currently have no volume in the series: Exodus, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Esther and Micah. Micah was left uncovered when Allen's volume left the catalog. For Chronicles, Eerdmans has already announced The Second Book of Chronicles, by Paul S. Evans, for May 2027. The second volume of Daniel, on chapters 7 to 12, by Buster and Walton, has also been announced.
And in Spanish?
Unlike the NICNT, which has translations from Tesoro Bíblico, CLIE and Portavoz, I have not found any NICOT volume translated into Spanish. That is why the carousel shows only the English editions.
Be careful with books by the same authors that do not belong to the series. For example, Proverbios: un breve comentario, by Bruce K. Waltke and Ivan D. V. De Silva (Kerigma), translates a different, shorter work and not the NICOT Proverbs. If a translation of the series appears, I will add it here.
